I was blown away by the incredibly helpful info Lillian Firestone shares in this book. If you're in The Work and have kids, it's a must. And even if you don't, it will help you even as an adult. There are recollections of her experiences with Mme de Salzmann and other direct students of Gurdjieff that are golden and I feel lucky to have been privy to them in this book. I hope to get to speak to the author in person some day.Product details

To receive some of the fruits of Gurdjieff's Work not from adults' inescapably interpretative explanations, but from children's candid realizations is a precious privilege that no book that I know had provided before. A personal favorite is the image from the girl that dreamed that her aching ankle was God's pen nib as He writes the history of humankind. Is that inspirational or what? It ranks with the likes of Chuang Tzu.
As relevant as entertaining, its insights should be of interest both for the Fourth Way's practitioners as well as for curious first-timers.
Lillian Firestone once joked that her family "put the fun into dysfunctional." Obviously she was being way modest, for her daughter teaches psychiatry at a major university while her boys win awards as playwrights and filmmakers (did you see what she wore to the Oscars?).
"Say thank you" is the soul-numbing mantra of parents who force their children to say what they do not feel. That at least is the assessment of Greek-Armenian explorer G. Ivanovich Gurdjieff, who ventured into spaces unknown both geographically and spiritually.
Newsflash The spiritual is not something out there, but right here right now, dealing with people at times lovable, at times incomprehensible. Bummer. Right now...??!! That's the story Lillian recounts from decades exploring Gurdjieff's innermost hinterlands, evidence of a growing psyche in the children's world, as well as in hers.
If you know people with kids, steer them to this book. As Cicero would have said Elevate the world one soul at a time.
This book opened my eyes to what my kids could accomplish if I could only let them. I always felt that we do too many things for them and they end up with few real life skills. I have given them more challenges since and have been amazed at the results. Any parent who reads this and follows this ethos will be amazed, too.
This book is absolutely unique from my perspective. It doesn't present a new theory or science about how to raise children. Rather, it presents the actual experience of a person who has spent a lifetime truly searching for ways to relate, inspire and educate children. The guiding principles are presented simply, but resonate deeply.
Themes centering on trust, courage, choice and effort are developed through the sincere questioning by the author and the others on the "Children's Team." What is most important is the type of effort which an adult can make to enter into the world of a child and help that child to become responsible through his/her own struggle and efforts. By allowing space for "solutions" to appear, the author and members of the Team create an environment of genuine empathy and understanding which helps the children to discover important principles and ideals in a way which is appropriate to their stage in life.
To me it is sad that this book is not better known. Other reviewers have made reference to the background of Gurdjieff's practical practice, and I have no problem with that. But the insights here from lived experience and not mere theory are altogether universal. Certainly the wisdom of this book will slip on like a glove upon a broad spectrum of ideologies and traditions. After all, we have here an enlightened and experienced mentor of children who takes us on a journey with actual children in a wide range of conditions, circumstances and exciting projects. I taught science for a decade within the shackles of the established system, and the limited extent to which I was able to incorporate the spirit of this book made me the talented teacher that I was known to be. Yet I shake my head in dismay at how little the United States understands and appreciates the kind of pedagogical wisdom Lillian Firestone brings to the plate. This book should be required reading in any degree program for childhood education.
Book received in fine condition. A rare perspective on children that would enrich the lives of adults who work or live with children and would enrich the lives of children whose teachers or parents have read the book.
