At 1,918 locations, this isn't the longest work. I look for a stirring adventure yarn from HRH. This was more of a love story/tragedy. The woman raised by baboons is odd, but what is interesting is that HRH is digging into the love of one woman for another. I honestly wonder if he knew what story he was telling there.There is the amusing bit about the old ruins, that must have been made by a lost white race. Rather amusing at this point.

So far, I've read far too many of these Allan Quartermain books by Henry Rider Haggard. They're sort of like popcorn. Not super good for you, not super filling, but for some reason, it's hard to stop once you start. Of the ones I've read so far, this was one of my favorites. Fun book. Would make a good movie I think.
I initially liked this first of three stories based on the author's Zulu adventures. There was a fair amount of violence, but I was able to skim over the sections that were violent. Then, the story veered into a slaughter of 80 elephants. It was graphic, disgusting, and disturbing. I realize these stories were written in times that were different (late 1800s/early 1900s), but this horrible slaughter of so many beautiful animals in order to secure and sell ivory left me greatly saddened. I was unable to continue on with the book after that. If you are an animal lover, this is not the book for you.
Excellent tale with many twists & drama.
I wish I had discovered Haggard long ago. I would has loved these books as a youth. I'm recommending then to my kids.
I ordered this for a friends kindle. She must have liked it as she is an avid reader and I've not heard otherwise. There are many kindle free editions of books and its nice, in this economy, to have access to reading material that is free. Thanks, , for this service..
It more of a short story rather than a full novel. We know from reading King Solomon's mines that Allan Quartermain had a son and now we meet his mother. The story involves killer baboons, a wise African witch doctor with a very cool name, a crazy baboon lady and the Lady who becomes Allan's second wife. I enjoyed the story and if you enjoy the stories of Allan Quartermain read this one and best of all it is free.
Another of the original tales of "The Great White Hunter" whos not a bad guy. Stories are set in late 19th century Africa. Truthfully written with no PC, in a better time.
